This was the third PC I built and it's a nearly ten year old DIY build that I've only really upgraded the graphics card and monitor on. I still run most games I like to play at 1080/1440p at high frame rates. There's nothing that says you can't milk a PC build for all it's worth

The only thing DIY on my desktop was the SSD that my son bought for me as a gift and installed. Since I don't use that computer anymore my other son took the SSD and suddenly his crap desktop worked well enough for him to play WoW with me
My kids are all heavy gamers, two of them ranked near the top ten worldwide.
Meanwhile, my laptop with SSD runs most things fine.
