Intel - Core i7-10700K

It was the best at the time and I didn't need an i9. I'd still recommend intel even with their current problems, mostly because I use my PC for more than gaming and linux drivers and VM's have been finicky in the past on AMD

In my DIY machine I'm running a very old 7th gen i7-7700K. I would not recommend putting a CPU this old in a modern build, however it has suited me well. For starters, I really like the mobo I'm using because it's got a lot of high-end features and 7th gen is the "newest" processor that fits its socket.

Fortunately, up until very recently, most games have ran primarily off a single CPU core. So as cores and threads kept getting larger and larger, the single most important factor of game performance was the speed of a single core. The i7-7700K is quick and mine is overclocked. Nowadays, more and more modern games are making better use of the high-core, high-thread CPUs that dominate the market so there's no reason not to grab something much newer. Also, nearly any new CPU will meet or exceed the specs of this old thing and draw MUCH LESS POWER, even the cheaper end.
